THE STORY OF USIn the Beginning

The StudentsThe Karafin School is able to accommodate eighty full time students. This small student body is one of the reasons that Karafin has the family atmosphere which so many of its students appreciate. Students come from all five boroughs of New York City and from the surrounding area, including Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, and Ulster Counties and from nearby Connecticut. The student body is about 60% male and 40% female and is racially diverse. White, African American, and Hispanic students make up the majority with a few other groups represented. The social and economic backgrounds of the students are also extremely diverse.
Students come to Karafin for many reasons. All are classified in need of special education but their actual diagnoses vary and include emotional and learning disabilities, other health impairment, and autism. Students are very accepting of each other, recognizing that everyone has issues to deal with. Most students are graduated from Karafin with Local or Regents Diplomas. A few earn Advanced Regents Diplomas. After graduation approximately 70% of students go on to two or four year colleges while a few join the military and some go straight to the work force. Many students return to visit after they have been graduated and share their experiences with current students who have questions for them as well as re-connecting with old teachers. In Their Own Words Karafin is not predictable. You can walk into the school and think it well be a bad day, but you will be proven wrong. Karafin is a crazy, happy, fun place that you can call a home. It is full of different kinds of people, people you can call family. - Alexandra M. Karafin is somewhere I honestly enjoy going, which is a blessing I never thought I’d get from a school. - Lina C. In this relaxed environment, it is easy to learn. - Jasmine A. Karafin is the best school anyone could go to. Every day is unique and not the same as the next. Karafin lets everybody whine in their own good way. - Michael R. Karafin is a unique school. It’s like no other school I’ve ever been to. It is a great school because it is tailored to each student’s individual needs. It is also a much smaller school than most high schools and that makes for a peaceful environment. The best thing about Karafin is all the teachers seem to actually want to help you to graduate from high school. - Alyssa G. Karafin is a unique and eclectic environment. The creative personalities of its students definitely contribute to the atmosphere Karafin exudes. Many stories have been told about Karafin, but they are hard to believe unless you have experienced them for yourself. - Shannon S. |
